Mask of Shadows-Book Review(No Spoilers)

Author: Linsey Miller

Release day: August 29th

Rating: 4/5 Stars

Series: First book in a series

Summary: “Sallot Leon is a thief, and a good one at that. But gender fluid Sal wants nothing more than to escape the drudgery of life as a highway robber and get closer to the upper-class and the nobles who destroyed their home.

When Sal Leon steals a poster announcing open auditions for the Left Hand, a powerful collection of the Queen’s personal assassins named for the rings she wears — Ruby, Emerald, Amethyst, and Opal — their world changes. They know it’s a chance for a new life.

Except the audition is a fight to the death filled with clever circus acrobats, lethal apothecaries, and vicious ex-soldiers. A childhood as a common criminal hardly prepared Sal for the trials. But Sal must survive to put their real reason for auditioning into play: revenge.” -From Goodreads

Review: First thing I want to say is to go into this book not expecting it to be like Throne of Glass or the Girsha Trilogy/Six of Crows Duology. If you do, then you might be disappointed with the book when it it a pretty good first book.

I want to right away talk about the main character. Sal is gender fluid and was a great character to follow. They were funny at times, including interesting and smart. I was rooting for them to be one of the Queen’s personal assassins like they have been wanting. Sal was just an interesting character to read and follow in this world Linsey created. The other characters were interesting too, but for some of them I would have liked to gotten to know more about them than I did.

Linsey’s writing was like Elisa Kova with being easy to read and follow. It made the book a quick read, including making me want to read the next book. Though unlike with Air Awakens I didn’t have to force myself to finish, because I was enjoying this book. Just there were times when it could have been better.

As for the world, it was interesting, but there didn’t seem to be a lot of world building to show it off. There were only bits and pieces of this world getting explained or shown. Wish there was more.

This is worth the read if you like fantasy, as well as wanting a fast read.

Have fun reading!!!
