Summary: “Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.
With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.” -From Goodreads
Review: This is the first time I read a book by Becky Albertalli and I enjoyed it very much.
With this being a contemporary, it was a quick read with many feelings, which was what I wanted. I thought the rep in this book was done well. At no point was I taken out of the story. I’m happy that it showed a bit more at the end instead of just ending like most contemporary novels do.
I enjoyed Becky Albertalli’s writing. She has a strong writing voice and was able to keep me reading the story all the way to the end. She wrote a story that needs to be read by many people, which it has and should continue to be.
Simon is a character that I loved very much throughout this novel. I liked that this whole novel was in his perspective. Not only that but I loved the family relationship and the relationship Simon had with his friends. The emails between him and Blue really showed their relationship, leading all the way to what their relationship would be at the end.
If you enjoy reading contemporary novels, then I highly recommend you read this book.
Have fun reading!
