A Reaper At The Gates-Book Review(No Spoilers)

Author: Sabaa Tahir

Series: An Ember In The Ashes #3

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Summary of Book One: “Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.” -From Goodreads

Review: This third book was worth the wait and lived up to what I wanted it to be.

Like in book two, there are three perspectives as the characters are at different places, though sometimes come together. Sabaa wrote each perspective well. She was also able to give each character their own voice without them sounding similar to each other.

The characters throughout this book did grow and were still interesting to read about. It was nice getting to see what each one was up to because they weren’t always together all the time. The romance between characters felt natural, not rushed or just put in there for no reason. This goes for both romantic love and nonromantic love.

This third book brought than it did in the second book. The world felt bigger. Stakes felt higher. The writing was still great. This book overall was not disappointing for me.

If you didn’t enjoy book two, then I highly recommend giving this third book a try. Definitely if you enjoyed book two, read book three.

Have fun reading!!

A Torch Against The Night-Book Review (Spoilers)

Author: Sabaa Tahir

Series: An Ember In The Ashes #2

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Summary: After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.

Laia is determined to break into Kauf – the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison – to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene – Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.

Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own – one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape… and kill them both.”-Summary from Goodreads

Review: When I heard there were going to be two more books in this series I was scared this was going to have the problem most second books have, but I was totally wrong. It’s a great second book.

Sabaa Tahir gives us a sequel that is even better than the first book. She knows how to write fantastic books, so I’m happy she is writing two more books in this series. She doesn’t disappoint ever.

For her characters, Sabaa is not scared of hurting or killing off her characters, which I like because that means anything can happen to the characters. Elias and Laia are so precious. I keep hoping they get a happy ending. When Elias got poisoned I thought he was going to die, but he didn’t, making me so happy. When the guy Laia slept with became a demon thing, my mouth dropped. Such a twist. This just helps that Elias and Laia  will be together now, hopefully until the end.

Now let’s talk about Helene. Her chapters gave me so many feels and became my favorite character. I want her to kill the commander chick, A.K.A. Elias’ mother, and Marcus just so she could be Empress. Nothing great was happening to her. Helene got humiliated, Marcus killed most of her family, and her youngest sister is married to Marcus. I just hope in the next book something good happens to her.

The story is still strong in this sequel. In my opinion, this book was better than the first book. It’s nice that one problem got solved, which was getting Laia’s brother out of prison, helping to get bigger problems continue on or rise. All I know is that this story is far from ending.

Overall, this is a perfect sequel to a great first book. I think anyone who has read An Ember In The Ashes needs to read this book. It’s totally worth it. You won’t be disappointed with this book.
